Modality & Technology

Modality

All 2026 courses will be offered in synchronous remote modality. This means that the teaching is live–real-time online instruction where students and teachers meet simultaneously via video conferencing for interactive lectures, readings, and problem sets, Q&A, discussions, and group activities.

All classes are scheduled in the US Eastern Time Zone.

Technology Requirements

You will need the following to participate in the program:

  • An attachable headphone/microphone (preferable) or audio from your computer
  • An attachable web camera (preferable) or a camera from your computer
  • The following bandwidth requirements
    • 600kbps (up/down) for high quality video
    • 1.2 Mbps (up/down) for 720p HD video
    • Receiving 1080p HD video requires 1.8 Mbps (up/down)
    • Sending 1080p HD video requires 1.8 Mbps (up/down)
  • A quiet room where you can be during the workshops and lectures without being interrupted

We encourage all participants to use a web camera and a headset. We ask participants to refrain from using built-in web cams and speakers on their desktops or laptops, if possible. We know from our experience in previous online courses that this will reduce the quality of video and audio transmission and therefore will decrease the overall learning experience for all participants in the program.

Participants in the Summer Institute may register for almost any combination of courses, including the HRS Workshop, provided they meet any stated prerequisites and avoid scheduling conflicts.
